THE PREMIER PIRATE WEEKEND ENACTMENT GAME EXPERIENCE

Bandits, Brigands & Buccaneers is an immersive enactment game experience, based in the dockside squalors, smuggling dens and pirate encampments surrounding a township, looking to break away from imperialist rule to become an independent Freeport.

As in all such times of change, there are various factions and alliances that seek to control and capitalize on the situation, to gain advantage over others.

The game thus reflects a time when the British Empire was under pressure, fighting wars against the French in America, Europe and Asia. A time when allies were becoming traitorous, colonies were seeking independence and Pirates were being rewarded as Privateers

Bringing together Re-enactors, Role-players, Historical Interpreters and Historical European Martial Artists, the event seeks to combine both fact and fiction, in 3 days of wonder filled, swashbuckling, adventure.

Participants rob the public, traders, tax collectors, shipments and each other, racketeer, smuggle and connive to gain the most amount of “game coin”, the highest prices on their heads and highest public office; or, the most medals, honours and highest rank - military coups can occur.

Winners of the May Mount Edgcumbe event were The Crew of the Butchers Blossom for robbing 8,742 gold & silver coin (with the Midnight Fleet runners-up with 7,795 coin). The most wanted character was Blunderbuss with a 1500 coin reward on his head, who was resurrected as Charles Vane wanted at 800 coin, before dying to end the weekend as Bonan the Carbarian with a bounty of 200 coin for his arrest. Hear be some of the tales told of the last…

“… in short;
Piracy, Extortion, Militia corruption, Midnight raids, Giant lobster attacks, A pirate ship, a fort, underground tunnels, Toll gates, Fantastic costume, Robbery, Buckling of the swash, the smell of black powder, canon, and a fantastic time…..”
Event Review – General Forums www.rule7.co.uk

“come on boy and girls lets froth shall we…..all in all a good fun event looking forward to September”

“Aye I absolutely loved the event…”

“Generally speaking the weekend was a total hoot and I loved it...”

“I’m confident in saying that larpers and re-enactors alike enjoyed the event and I for one really liked having the chance to meet re-enactors of all kinds and to get into the spirit of the game with them”

“…the whole weekend was a great laugh…..for the skyline battle, as far as I know this is the first time that anyone has achieved the combined black powder and steel display battle with the (almost) seamless transition to a latex sword and capgun fight.”
Various posts on Scurvy Scum – Live Roleplaying Systems Forum www.rule7.co.uk

“Just to say how much I enjoyed the weekend. I am from a re-enactment background…..This event allowed re-enactors and LARPers to achieve a much-needed cross-over…”

“Can I make it clear to all who missed out on BBB, they missed out on the most fun I have had in a LARP event ever. To all who were there thank you, from myself and all the Barbary corisairs (crazy turkish pirates). We know we would be the butt of all jokes and blamed for everything, still most crime we were guilty included: Great gate coin heist, The miltia tent heist, Casino robbery, Mortsroom hunts, jail break, control of town and scams of public coins.”

“To be honest, I was initially doubtful about taking part as I've never been involved with LARP (although 1st-person LH can be pretty similar), but all doubts seemd to have disappeared early on Friday evening, and I had a whale (or mayhap a giant lobster) of a time and the next one is in the diary as a "must do". Many thanks to everyone involved.”

FOR PIRATICAL & SWASHBUCKLING ROLE-PLAYERS & RE-ENACTORS

LATEST NEWS

1st September– All’s under full sail for the Fort Amherst event - All’s under full sail for the Fort Amherst event, the emphasis this time being on giving participants the very best Bandits, Brigands & Buccaneers experience; not just in terms of setting and look, but in terms of adventure, daring-do and full-on piratical involvement. Ya gonna ave some serious fun this’ne, I’ms a tellin’ ye. We’ve a full range of entertainers to entertain thee and our poor cannon fodder public, but this time they’ll ave far more to yield to thee than just the game coin ye’ll be a stealin’ from’em. They’ll have clues to lost treasures and rumours of foul enemies also a huntin’ them – to the winner the spoils and be prepared, t’ tell’ee more would just ruin the salty tales yet t’ be told… The Ghost Hunters using the Tunnels on the Saturday Night will not be affecting the plot – you’ll have well and enough to contend with yourselves up, back, in the wooded ruins – the tunnels will be fully utilised during the event Friday and Sunday nights and every day. Costs for participants £35.00 if received before 16th September, £50.00 on the gate.

ALL CHANGE AT FORT AMHERST AGAIN – Bristol as a consequence is dropped, Fort Widley can’t be resurrected. Fort Amherst, Chatham 24th to 26th September 2010

Reasons: Premise licence issues (given event numbers) are still to be resolved – I can, and will, take care of this myself if necessary, before the new September date, but currently the Trustees of the Fort wish to continue their application in their own name for the long term benefit of all events taking place there. I have undertaken to work with them on this.

Mount Edgcumbe was a massive success, and although it’s going to cost me dearly in cancelling the intervening events I have to make sure the next continues this upward trend in expectation. I daren’t jeopardise the success of the future events by rushing on and not taking into account, or responding to, all your helpful ideas, constructive comments and suggestions either e-mailed directly to me, sent via face book or communicated on The Pirates Forumotion. I value your input; it needs acknowledgment, discussion and incorporation into the game. Adequate crewing/marshalling is key but so also is the devolvement, understanding and involvement, at group level, in plot and reasons/excuses for set pieces and battles, at set times (the 3 time tabled seaborne raids a day at Edgcumbe for example) within the overall game flow. The re-enactors do their displays when scheduled but I also need to make sure they have liaison in incorporating them into all that is going on so that they maximise their enjoyment of the event.

The Wanted Posters are now working well under Mick & Esme control but they would have been unable to be involved in the end of July date. Smuggling of contraband and its rewards needs to be simplified and this will be sorted by Fort Amherst in September.

Replies to all you various suggestions and discussion topics will now start being made as well as event photographs being put up on the Scurvy Scum website (all of Mayhem’s are up Esme’s Friday batch is up Sat, Sun & Mon to come) as well event winners notices and mentions in despatches. Please keep an eye on the website and join the face book page.

22nd June – Esme Brown's Photos of the Mount Edgcumbe Event - first page (8) of Photos, from the Friday up on site in Events & Galleries section. Thanks Esme..

21st June – Mayhem Photography Photos of the Mount Edgcumbe Event - 7 Pages of Photos up on site in Events & Galleries section. My thanks to Dick.

11th June – IMPORTANT DATE CHANGES - Fort Widley cancelled; Fort Amherst, Chatham postponed until 30th July - 1st August. We are victims of our own success Reasons: Fort Widley - Len & Silver have left. The riding stables have taken over day to day running of the fort and were proposing to limit our use of cannon and gun fire until after 3.00pm. The caravan club booking the previous weekend was also limiting our set-up from the Wednesday only. Last time at Fort Widley we had just under 200 participants now we are running at well over 400 with lots more stalls and props to erect. Fort Widley would be "bursting at the seams" just coping with us let alone the public. Yes we could hire fields at the back of the fort for extra camping and parking but guns, horses and overcrowding issues really prohibit our safe use of the fort any further.

Fort Amherst - is a fantastic venue, a totally different site to Mount Edgcumbe, overlooking a loop in the Thames, with tunnels, huge caverns, many ramparts and buildings we can use, as well as camping in woodland glades and adventures in other ruins - we need to make best use of this site to provide participants with a truly

unforgettable experience. Currently there are illness and premises issues which would have been resolved by the end of the month but with the situation at Fort Widley it was thought best to give it more time.

The new dates - do not conflict with any major role-play or re-enactment events and having rung around all the major participant groups, the Crimson Moon, caterers and performers to establish that they can make these dates the next event is now confirmed: Fort Amherst, Chatham 30th July to 1st August.

8th June – 2 Minute Promo on You Tube This 1st edit made public before approval is fine, except it should have had a role-player interviewed as well, to provide balance. It has primarily been made to help promote the event to potential new venue owners, so Scurvy Scum can come north, for more to participate and enjoy. You can access this current.edit by clicking here

A final edit will be embedded on the website soon along with a 10 minute documentary and video news reel.

4th June – Thanks to me Scurvy Crew we couldn't have done it with out you. We are now packed-up and away from Mount Edgcumbe with fond memories of a fantastic site and an exceptional piratical experience, made all the better by every participant. My thanks to one and all...

20th May – Aargh the Keewaydin be savin’ the day… With the Bessie Ellen unable t’ make it back to Plymouth in time, the black ship Keewaydin be takin’ over the attack runs on the Cremyll ferries 3 times a day in front of Plymouth Hoe, cannon n’ swivel gun a blazin’…

The Devonport Beagle projects montague whaler will also be involved in Marine landings and the Spirit of Rame along with other smuggler crewed pilot gigs will be helping in the landing of contraband…

6th May – New Medals for Military Actions. For Militia, Revenue, Town Guard and Marines 4 new medals as pictured above, replicas of those awarded in the Peninsular & Napoleonic Wars. To find out more and other benefits in playing Militia click here

4th May – New Toys-for-the-Boys – so re-enactors have taken up foam and latex, now role-players can join in the black powder and steel areas of the battle – training first. Specially commissioned, 9mm blank firing Blunderbuss & Pistols, so need for a licence, but they are only to be used, when & where, black powder is being used. New long-arms coming soon the new re-enactment cutlasses will be on show shortly. For more details click here “Have a Care”

1st May – New Training Nights for Participants local to Mount Edgcumbe. 2 new training nights have started for all manner of piratical activities, swashbuckling & hornpipe included, every Tuesday and Wednesday Plymouth and Millbrook all styles of Participant welcome. For more information click here.

5th April – Investment continues in Township and Encampments. 4 new Watch Towers to help with the wider gates, new timber framed fronts to the Merchant Ventures Hall and Bank, mast, crows-nest and dance deck for the evenings “Rum n’ Hornpipe”, 3 new coffins for burials, and new grave stones – now you’ll be able to take away your own Epitaph as well as your own Wanted Poster.

6th April – Ship scupperin' news, then full sail to the rescue from the Baltic.

After getting permission from the owners and the harbourmaster to attack the largest of the Cremyll Ferries 3 times a day in front of Plymouth Hoe, we learn to our cost why the owners of The Phoenix had held off from full contract. 4 days does not compare to a 5 weeks charter sailing the Irish Sea.

However, after approaching The Ruth, out of Penzance, the skipper of The Phoenix has found us another ship, The Bessie Ellen (above), returning to her home port of Plymouth – one of the last west country ketches, the favoured ship of the famed Cawsand Bay Smugglers.

22nd March – Scurvy Scum promotes at The Original Re-enactors Market.

Aargh… We welcome more n’ more of ye to the fray… More Sea Thieves joining the Sheppey’s; more joining the Rievers

Revenge; the Siege Group joining as Privateers, alongside the Bone Idol, operating under the governors “Letter o’ Mark”.

24th Nov – Cruel Tide Gift Vouchers now available for Xmas

Aargh… If no one knows what t’get ye for Yule Tide, how’s about one of these here vouchers...

As stated on the costs and registrations page, they cost just £25.00; and as well as getting into the late May Bank Holiday event, they also entitle you to play at every other 2010 event at the same £25.00 price, no matter when you pay, even “on-the-gate”. However, you do have to register by e-mail at least 3 weeks before the event you’re attending – preferably earlier. To go to registration form, and order voucher, click here

12th Nov – Brigantine, the Phoenix now at Edgcumbe

.At the late May Bank Holiday event, at Mount Edgcumbe, we are now using The Phoenix, a brigantine, larger, more manoeuvrable than The Matthew, and more in keeping with the event.

It also takes more passengers, in addition to crew, and lots more when at mooring.

As an incentive for the various pirate groups to get their crews together and get their names in early, there are eight 12 place slots, for piratical manoeuvres, at sea, aboard the Phoenix.

There’s no charge for these places as they’ll be used for directed roles which will be fun for the participants, will earn them “coin”, and prices on all their heads. They will be allocated on a “first come first, served basis” as an incentive to book early.

Come on Cap’ns, let’s be ‘av’in you, get yaz scurvy crews together… Ha arg

1st Nov - Huge thanks to Participants & Crew
We’ve now arisen from all flotsam n jetsam, salvage, shipment and stowage of all the equipment, props and kit that was the last Scurvy Scum event of this year. Having received all your good comments and praises concerning all the fun and shinnanigans you all got up to, and looked at all the many photos, it seems it was a lot more successful than I, submerged in the problems on the inside could have fathomed. A huge thanks to all that participated and worked so hard in keeping it on the right course and steering it clear all the reefs and shallows we encountered. It would not have been the same without you. Once again a massive heart felt thanks to all.

September Photo Gallery links now appear on the Events & Galleries Page:
those from Sean Maguire of Skian Mhor link
and those from Iain Sewell of The Crimson Moon are at link. The Photo Montages are currently being updated and a number of photos from the September event appear at the bottom of the home page with montage link.

20th September – 25-27 Sept event is 37% up on numbers
- and that’s before we start taking more on the gate. All player packs have been prepared in accordance with the names on the now updated Player Participant Lists, Militia, Entertainer & Trader Personnel and Crew Lists on the website.
We will be away from Monday Morning with set-up beginning at Fort Widley on Tuesday.

All the things that weren't quite right with the first event have been corrected - wanted posters, ship sides etc and some of the new tweaks been added. Has been a very busy time and apologise for not updating the various news columns, notice boards and forums.
See you all at Fort Widley Friday.
Loot n' shoot well me hearties

27th June – Event Late May Bank Holiday 2010
Plans for next years events are afoot, the first will be at: Mount Edgcumbe, opposite Plymouth – straight run down the M5 and A38. The area of the site we are using is large, easily accommodating the Citadel, Squalors and a host of Pirate and Outlaw Encampments and boasting:
landing beaches, a 3 cannon battery (those there don’t work but we will be adding considerably to the fire-power),
a fortified block house for the jail, a temple for the crustacean cultists and a folly. Most important of all
, the full size replica of an Elizabethan Barque, The Matthew, will be standing off in the Barn Pool deep water anchorage, providing: more cannon fire, at least 2 tiers of plank walking, crows nest climbs (yes all safety harness/insurance in place), raiding trips,
late night dinning & Captains meetings etc.
More craft will be involved, the passenger ferries coming from Admirals Hard and the May Flower Steps, will come under attack.
